XBOX

Unveiling the new iPhone 4, Jobs dispensed with his usual "and one more thing" to haul out a glistening glass-front-and-back device he called the "most precise, beautiful thing".

He's probably right. The new iPhone, predictably almost, has taken smart phones to a new level (as defined by Jobs, of course) with, at 960x640, "the highest resolution display ever built into a phone", a screen quality Apple is calling "retina display", a 5MP camera with an LED flash, faster Wi-Fi (802.11n), HD video recording (720p), all in a 9.3mm-thin case, which Jobs claims is the thinnest smart phone. There's also a front-facing camera, which goes hand-in-hand with a new video-calling feature called FaceTime (for use, only, it seems, with other iPhone 4 users).

Apple has thrown in a 3-axis gyro and up to 40% longer talk time, renamed the operating system iOS 4 (with 100 new features), even using the stainless steel band as its antennae.

Vodacom will reveal only that the phone is arriving in "coming months", but, given previous iPhone releases, we can expect to see it in September or October.

The iPhone 4 is another design masterpiece from Apple, the display alone catapulting it ahead of the competition.
